To build trust and rapport, it's better to really get to know someone during conversations. One of the best techniques for this is asking "why."

When you ask why, people can open up about themselves. It moves the conversation beyond superficial tasks and events, and gets to the actual person. If they are willing to share, they will—and most people do. It is a great way to truly get to know them.

It's important to know what type of conversation it is in order for people to actually connect. There are three main types:
• Practical conversations
• Emotional conversations
• Social communications

Listen to what they said, repeat what they said in my own words, and then confirm with them if I got it right.

That really shows you are engaged in these conversations and actively listening to them, and not just waiting your turn to talk.
